Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are ceramic pipes safe to smoke out of?

Yes. Our Ceramic pipes are made with non toxic, lead free minerals, and are free of any other harmful materials. If you are looking to purchase from another manufacturer check with them to ensure they are using safe materials.

2. Will ceramic tobacco pipes withstand high temperatures?
Yes. Our ceramics can withstand 2,350 degrees fahrenheit, so if you are using a lighter, magnifying glass, or wick you have nothing to worry about. Ceramics are insulators and are great at keeping heat in. This allows you to keep the bowl rolling without burning your hand from to much heat emitting from the bowl. Our ceramics are not intended to be used with a blow torch.

3. What is the difference between ceramic pipes and glass pipes?
The primary difference between the two is their crystalline structure. Now it is a bit complex because glass and ceramics (pottery) fall under the broad category of ceramics. Our ceramics have a crystalline structure, which in simpler terms means that the clay consists of particles that are organized to repeat on and on in the same connectivity throughout the entire formation of the pipe. As for glass it is an amorphous structure. This means glass has some organization freedom primarily being able to be as a solid or a liquid when being worked with heat. For glass the chemical structure is made of interconnected building blocks which makes a unique bond between all atoms forming the glass pipe. Do note that our ceramics are coated with glass (known as glaze) making it a crystalline and amorphous structure. Lastly our ceramics have a natural energy emitting from every piece, but in general ceramics have an earthy feel that glass may or may not have.

4. Are glass pipes or ceramic pipes stronger?
There are many factors to account for when answering this question. The primary answer we have seen is how and who made the pipe. If the pipe was made from the thoughts of greed or the need to make money to survive, then chances are it is was not a pipe that was made with love and will not last forever. When you know who makes the pipe and why, you begin to understand the love that it was created with. Love is key in making a truly strong pipe. Next is the process in which they were made. If any process for glass such as annealing is done improperly it will result in a flawed piece, and for ceramics if the bisq fire was skipped it would also result in a flawed piece. Lastly we would say thickness of the pipe adds to the strength. To answer your question, purchase a pipe directly from someone who loves to make pipes (glass or ceramic) and creates them using the highest standards. This will ensure that you will now have a pipe that you will care to love and then strength will be of little concern. As for a straight answer, if the thickness of both glass and ceramic pipe were equal and the "how it was made" was flawless, they would be EQUALLY AS STRONG.

5. Where does Ceramic Smokeware make their pipes?
We hand make all of our ceramic pipes in Salt Lake City, Utah. All of our clay and glazes are also made in Salt Lake City.

6. How do you clean a ceramic pipe?
You clean our ceramic pipes the same way you would clean a glass pipe. The inside of our pipes also have glaze allowing for an easy clean. Any glass cleaning formula will work but the cheapest cleaning solution is Isopropyl and salt. To clean, place plenty of your cleaning solution into a reusable plastic bag and then place your pipe in the bag. Shake for 5 minutes or until clean and then rinse pipe inside and out with water. To clean our water pipes, place the cleaning solution directly into the piece. Shake for 5 minutes and rinse with water after clean. When cleaning your bowl use the plastic bag method.

7. How does Ceramic Smokeware make their pipes?

As the year progresses we will upload videos on various processes of how we make our pipes. So stay tuned.
